Sometimes a mom just gets tired--you know? My morning routine includes picking up extra dirty socks left by the back door, books left in the dining room and blankets left sprawling over couches. Like I said, I'm not a fabulous housekeeper, but I am a bit of a neatnik. I feel most peaceful when my house is straight.
My blood pressure would always spike precipitously when I opened the coat closet beside our front door. Scarves, mittens and hats piled on the top shelf teetered and sometimes plunged to the floor. Ach! Another pile to clean up!
I saw a great idea in a magazine to address this problem. It had been on my list to try for a long time, and I finally did it. It's an easy and wonderful fix for the coat closet problem.
I got a shoe bag that mounts on hooks over the top of the door, cut off the bottom section (I've had hooks for coats for a long time. Coats are more likely to be "hooked" than hung at my house.), and hung it up. Now I'm a little obsessive about the aesthetics of projects, and I didn't like those hooks showing on the outside of the closet door. I made another trip to Walmart to buy some of those handy-dandy 3M hooks to attach to the inside of the door. Alakazam--a neat coat closet!
Here's a picture of my top shelf now.
I can't wait to hear some of your organization solutions!

Oh Girl! You may have just solved the coat closet problem for me. We have some stackers in the top of the closet for scarves and gloves, which I, of course, can never reach because I am vertically challenged!
As for the hanging of coats, they don't get hung much around my house either except on the back of chairs in the breakfast area and dining room and the rail at the bottom of the stairs. Need a coat? Pick a room with your size and color!
Love this idea, and the hooks at the bottom??? Why, I might even be able to get Rachel to put her coat on the INSIDE of the door instead of on the doorknob!
Thanks for the tip!
Love and Blessings!

I love this, Amy. Being a bit organizationally obsessed...this is another great idea! Looking forward to all ideas - have a great weekend (with no piles to pick up!)
What a wonderful idea! We are in some desperate need of organizing tips around our house! That is a great one!
Thanks so much :) Have a lovely week!

Amy,
What a great idea! I have four children ranging from 23 to 10 yrs. old. We homeschool so my coat closet in our foyer has been turned into a storage place for bookshelves and a three drawer rolling bin. I think I could make your idea work.
Thanks,
Renee

we use a similar pocket holder thingy (made for shoes, i think) in our pantry. holds all of those crazy little packets of stuff or things that just don't stack nicely.
this is a great way to use the same product in our hall closet. what a good idea!! thanks!
