Book or Bytes?

If you've been reading my blog, you've probably picked up that I'm an avid reader. As long as I can remember, my place of choice is on the couch with a book. Even though I'm an extrovert and love people, I can tune you right out, my friend, if I have a book.

So here's a very important question that I desperately need your help with: Do you like books better, or do you have (or want) a Kindle (or any other book-like computer--I'm a little in the dark about options)?

Please, please let me know what you prefer and why. I'm thinking about my Christmas list. :)

I so love the feel, smell and weight of books that I'm not sure I can convert. Maybe you can convince me otherwise. For those of you that still love to hold a book, don't miss out on the 31% off all resources from Proverbs 31 Ministries. You can click here to get to our resource page. This sale only lasts through the week!

Everyone in my family is an avid reader. My daughter, oldest son and myself just love a book in our hands, so much so we never leave the house without at least one in our bag. But those 2 oldest children have requested the nook for Christmas. We discussed the ease of taking it on trips and having access to a huge selection of books and wi-fi while only taking up minimal space. We will never give up the love of books but technology can help for those times like traveling on a mission trip and there are luggage limits. We look forward to trying ours out at Christmas.

It doesn't matter if it's picking up my leather Bible, devotion book, Christian fiction, magazines, or even my journal, I absolutely LOVE to hold the written word in my hands! There's nothing better than to sitting in my comfy chair with a cup of coffee and a good book!

I'm addicted to books myself. My whole family is.
This past weekend....my hubby purchased a Nook from Barnes & Noble. He's away on business right now and called me last night to tell me...HE'S IN LOVE with it.
He reads around 5-6 books per week. So, this dude must be pretty awesome!

I have a friend who "loves" her Kindle - I thought I wanted one - but then I started looking at all "my books" and I just knew that I had to have them instead. Plus the fear of losing the Kindle or breaking it - where would that leave me? So, I decided to stay with the books! Another reason - I can "re-gift" them or give them to the ones I love "after I read them". :)

I'm a total book girl. I really am. I love the feel of a paper book in my hand. I like taking notes in the margins. I like bending the pages and making the cover seem well worn and loved.

Sigh.

I really love books.

I love books too, but I recently downloaded the PC Kindle app to my laptop and tried it out that way. Now, it's bigger since the laptop screen is bigger, but I'm loving it. I'll never give up books with real pages to turn, but I think a kindle or such would be great for travel. I'm thinking of asking for one for Christmas too!rwsmith62

As awesome as technology can be, I'm totally a book girl too. I love holding a book in my hands, turning the pages, even the smell. And, even though I spend a lot of time reading on the computer, I prefer reading words on a paper than on a screen.

I am totally a hold in my hands book girl. I love sitting there holding it and then keeping the ones that I love to one day read again or give to someone special.

I am also a total book person however......my husband bought me the Kindle as a present while is was pregnant. I do not leave the house with out it (as I never before left the house with out a book). If I was Oprah, the top of my list of My Favorite Things would be my Kindle. I love, I love it, I love it. Every now and then I purchase a book but 99% of what I read is on my Kindle. It is so incredibly comfortable to hold in bed, on the couch, in a doctors office, waiting in the car, where ever. I recommend in the highest regard a Kindle. It may take a book or so to get used to but it is wonderful! I love to browse the book stores and head home to purchase on my kindle. I am no techie person as this is my fist response to any blog ever......

I love to hold a book in my hands. I have a bookmark at the ready to mark my place too. I have a feeling that Kindle will be the way to go in the future but I usually fight off technology as long as possible.

A comfy spot on the couch, a warm blanket, and a kindle? Hmmm, not so much for me. I suppose I still like the seemingly old-fashioned way of actually holding the book in my hands. However, I do see the benefits in having a kindle or something like that for travel. It's one of those try it and see if you like it kind of options. Besides, it would create more bookshelf space . . . . .

I received a nook for my birthday from my husband and really love it. I thought I would miss the feel of a real paper book, but I really havent. When I finish a book on it, it is so nice to be able to buy another one as soon as I want to. There is a "share" feature on it, so if you have a friend with one, you can still share "books" with each other.

NO to the Kindle. There is nothing that compares to holding the written word in your hands and being taken to another place. Be it slowing down to take in God's word, enjoying the beautiful flow of poetry, a big coffee table book with wonderful pictures, a whimsical childs book with great illustrations...NO to the Kindle.

Both! You don't have to choose one over the other. Holding a favorite book, feeling and turning it's pages, putting in your favorite book mark to hold your place, highlighting and writing in the margins are just a few of the intimacies that make reading such a personal experience. A Kindle can not replace that emotional connection we often have with "real" books. But there are advantages to incorporating a Kindle into your life and library. When I go anywhere I always take along a "real" book and my Kindle. That way I am actually taking about 200 books with me! I read mostly non-fiction on my Kindle and fiction and devotionals in print form. I like the Kindle when I am reading for information purposes and books for my more personal reading.

I love books, but the convenience of audio is a blessing. I do not have a kindle. Although I could see it as a blessing when it comes to travel. Books take up a lot of suit case space.

I'm torn, too. And I 'm a library girl. While Kindle books are less that a newly published hard cover, the library is free! If I want to own a book, it's often so I can write in it and dog-ear the pages. But a Kindle would be great on vacation to take up less space and to be able to get a new book when you're ready. But is it worth the money? Hmmmmm.

I must agree with Terry. She hit it right on the nose. No, there is really, for me, such a good feeling of holding a book in your hands, bending the pages, making you own little note's to remember., and the smell of my leather Bible, well, that is the best. I love turning the pages, opening to a page to a verse, and just read and ponder it for a while. My other books are special, I love to walk around with a book. It makes me feel good. So, if I love all of this and more, I guess I will not give up my Books any time soon.
